More about kettlebell training
A kettlebell is a free weight shaped like a cannonball with a handle. Some say it also looks like a kettle without a spout, hence the origin of the name kettlebell.
Its origin seems to date back to the early 1700s in ancient Russia where the word “Girya” meaning kettlebell was first discovered in a Russian dictionary. The men who lifted them were called “Gireviks”
The kettlebell was originally used as a counterweight on a scale in farmers markets to determine if one was getting the accurate amount of rations. A 16kg kettlebell, called a Pood, was placed on one side of the scale and the rations on the other until the scale settled.
Beyond this use, the girya (kettlebell) gained popularity as a tool for physical training and would appear at social gatherings as a form of entertainment. During these gatherings, gireviks would demonstrate their abilities and strength and would compare prowess with the kettlebell.
